Khadakwasla is a moderate sized dam on the Mutha river, located about 21 kilometres southwest of the city of Pune, and named after the nearby village of Khadakwasla. This dam is one of the main sources of water for the city of Pune.
It is a favorite picnic spot for many in the city. Crowded on weekends, it is better to visit on weekdays and if you go to the shore side that is away from the main sinhagad road (below the dam and then to the left as you come up) it is quiet bliss as you swim and sunbathe in peace with only the cows to disturb you occasionally. On the banks, one can enjoy some fast food and camel/elephant ride. Khadakwasala is situated at the feet of Sinhgad fort.
If one asks about the 'Chowpati' in Pune, the Puneits will go for Khadakwasla (about 21 km from Pune). Panshet(from Pune 45 km) and Varasgaon (very close to Panshet) are the three major dams near Pune which provides water to entire Pune city.
Panshet is one of the popular places near Pune for picnic lovers. Panshet dam was built in late 50's. It became famous in 1961 when the dam collapsed and the entire water grabbed Pune city. Now a days, Panshet is popular because of Water sports here. One can have a nice road to Panshet surrounded by dark green woods. If you are a water-sports freak, this is the place where you will love to spend your weekend. There are facilities for kayaking and wind surfing, swimming. You can also ride speed boat and water scooter.
Very close to the Panshet dam, Warasgaon dam is located and road winds through the two walls. Tourist will find many resorts with great amenities and booking available on phone. While on road, you will find great varities of wild flowers in addition to blue lotus, palas, forest fire flower and also birds alongwith lush green vegetation.
Pune Municipal corporation buses (PMT) ply regularly to the Khadakwasala dama and nearby villages from Deccan, Swargate.
